about

The Hartford Drive Music Festival is/was a block party put on in South Boulder (on Hartford Drive, naturally) the second Saturday in August. Later on it moved to September, presumably because global climate change made August too hot. A real family oriented event, there would be a pig roast and neighborhood pot luck and beer kegs donated by Southern Sun Brewpub down the street. $10 for folks not bringing their own pot luck. Free beer and food for the musicians. At that time, Bob Wham was the music impresario, setting up an ad-hoc PA system in Bryan Handwork's garage, the front of the garage serving as an elevated stage. Behind the musicians was a panoply of machinery serving Bryan's contracting work. This event has been going on, as of 2021, for over 20 years although the Covid pandemic has put it on hiatus. In August of 2007, Strange New Worlds played a set, with Bob sitting in on the electric guitar.

released December 1, 2008

Here's the Standard Rap: Strange New Worlds consisted of three core members: Luke Palmer, on keyboards (elec piano, synths); Eric Hoaglund (drums & percussion); and Evan Cantor (bass guitars and sometimes other things...). The "Fourth World", our favorite collaborator was Nolan McFadden on electric guitar. SNW pursued pure improv, never planning, never practicing, never playing the same thing twice, always starting from absolute scratch, even in scheduled live performances. It was a helluva ride!

Even at their numerous live performances, SNW pursued a narcotic improvisation entirely in the moment, a spontaneous juggernaut of sound. Luke Palmer, Eric Hoaglund and Evan Cantor (see also Walls Of Genius) made free open associative music, recording it all. ... more
